Nerdy News You Need to Know: She-Ra Edition

She-Ra

Netflix

Lately, it has become nearly impossible to keep up-to-date on everything; staying on top of the incredibly fast-paced news cycle is overwhelming enough. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we miss news about things we actually like (I nearly missed the She-Ra trailer, which borders on blasphemy in my world, for example). This is where Geeks in Art is here to help; by rounding up all the nerdy news you need to know that you may have missed over the past week.

More Information About The Flash’s New Villain Released

She Ra

The CW

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly earlier this week, Grant Gustin revealed a little more information about season five’s big bad, Cicada. Cicada, played by Chris Klein, will be the show’s second non-speedster big bad, but Gustin promises he is unique in quite a dangerous way:

He can dampen other metahuman powers, and we don’t know at first how he’s able to do that. He’s got an edge that no other big bad has ever had. We don’t know who he is. He’s mysterious. He’s just kind of an intimidating, big, scary man that can render pretty much all of these metahuman superheroes useless, more or less, in battle…He comes on really hard and fast the first time we meet him, so right away there’s an intimidation factor that’s through the roof, similar to Zoom.

While Team Flash deals with a metahuman unlike any other they have met, Barry and Iris must also face a unique challenge: sudden parenthood to their adult child from the future. This doesn’t mean the upcoming season is going to be all doom and gloom, though. Gustin also told Entertainment Weekly that viewers can expect to see the same type of “heart and humor” they saw in the show’s first season.

The Flash returns on Tuesday October 9 at 8:00 p.m.

Could a Major Batman Character be Involved in This Year’s Arrowverse Crossover?

She Ra

Comicbook.com

This year’s Arrrowverse crossover gets increasingly interesting with every casting announcement. The most recent one: Cassandra Jean Amell as Nora Fries, who is, traditionally, the wife of Batman villain Mr. Freeze. She first appeared in a heartbreaking episode of Batman: The Animated Series as the wife of Victor Fries. Nora was suffering from a terminal illness, and in an attempt to save her, Fries had her cyrogenically frozen. It was an attack in this lab that caused him to become Mr. Freeze. The CW has not released any more details about the character, so it is unclear what kind of role she is set to play.

Amell has appeared in numerous series, including Mad Men, One Tree Hill, CSI:NY, CSI, and CSI: Miami. She and Arrow actor Stephen Amell married in 2012, and have one daughter.

Arrow will return on Monday, October 15. The three-episode crossover starts with Supergirl on Sunday, December 9 and concludes with The Flash on Tuesday, December 11.

Marvel Cancels Vision Before It Even Debuts

She Ra

Marvel

In a shocking move, Marvel announced the cancellation of The Vision, the upcoming six-issue miniseries from Chelsea Cain, Marc Mohan, and Aud Koch, months before its expected release. The series was going to pick up right after Tom King and Gabriel Walta’s run ended, focusing on Vision and his relationship with his daughter, Viv.

On Twitter, Cain confirmed the cancellation, letting her followers know that four issues (representing over two years of work) had already been turned in, and that there was no reason given by Marvel for the move.

The Vision was going to mark her return to Marvel after the cancellation of Mockingbird, and the barrage of social media abuse she endured in its wake. Fans of Cain should pick up Man-Eaters, her series with Mockingbird’s artist Kate Niemczyk, from Image Comics.

When a threat no one could have expected bears down on the Marvel Universe, this ragtag, untrained band of teens have no choice but to rise together and prove to the world that sometimes the difference between a ‘hero’ and a ‘misfit’ is just in the name.

The First Trailer for She-Ra: Princesses of Power Released and OMG It’s Everything

I have been a fan of She-Ra for as long as I can remember. She was my everything growing up. I even dressed as her for Halloween when I was six. Her strength, power, empathy, compassion, and kindness are all qualities I still aspire to. Truthfully, I could write thousands upon thousands of words in an ode to She-Ra and still have more to say. As you can imagine, I was ecstatic when Netflix announced the reboot. I was even happier when I found out that Noelle Stevenson, creator of the amazing comic series Nimona and Lumberjanes, was at the helm. This week, Netflix gave us a teaser and a release date! The show looks amazing, preserving what was perfect about the show and updating the rest to inspire today’s audience. DreamWorks describes the show as follows:

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is the story of an orphan named Adora, who leaves behind her former live in the even Horde when she discovers a magic sword that transforms her into the mythical warrior princess She-Ra. Along the way, she finds a new family int eh Rebellion as she unites a group of magical princesses in the ultimate fight against evil.

I mean, how can you not be excited for this series?!

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power debuts on Netflix on November 16, 2018.
